Ten Mi’kmaw communities in Nova Scotia are now generating renewable electricity through a shared solar project, supported by more than $4.8 million in combined investment.
The Government of Canada says its contribution was $3,625,476, with $1,208,492 contributed by the participating communities.
The project installed net-metered solar systems across the ten communities, allowing them to supply power to the utility and pay only for the net amount of electricity they use.
Partners on the work include Ulnooweg Development Group, Bayside Renewables, and Eskasoni Renewables.
Beyond cutting carbon, the announcement emphasizes practical community benefits: lower energy costs, new renewable-energy jobs, and more autonomy over local energy decisions.
