As AI tools spread into schools, hospitals, workplaces, and government services, there is a growing need for practical, shared standards that put people first. UNESCO says it has taken a new step in that direction with a free online course focused on the ethics of artificial intelligence.
In an announcement from Seoul, UNESCO and LG AI Research said they have launched a global massive open online course (MOOC) on the Ethics of AI. The course is hosted on Coursera and is open to learners worldwide.
UNESCO says the course is grounded in the UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of AI, a framework adopted unanimously by UNESCO’s 193 Member States in 2021. The new MOOC is designed to introduce the Recommendation’s core principles and help learners apply an “ethics-by-design” approach in the systems they build, deploy, or regulate.
The course is aimed at technologists, researchers, policymakers, students, and anyone whose work touches AI. UNESCO says it is delivered primarily in English, with translation options in 11 languages.
UNESCO frames the course as a global public good: free, globally accessible learning intended to make ethical AI less of a slogan and more of a skill set people can actually use.
