Solar power and battery storage are being installed quickly enough to change the U.S. electricity system in visible ways. pv magazine USA reports that new data compiled by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) point to a series of deployment and generation milestones in 2026.
In the first quarter of 2026, solar and energy storage together accounted for 91% of all new electricity generation capacity added to the U.S. grid, the highest combined quarterly share the two technologies have recorded.
The same report notes that solar generation exceeded coal generation in the United States for the first time on a monthly basis in May 2026.
Regional operators have also logged new peaks: the California Independent System Operator’s battery fleet set a record discharge of 12.99 GW on July 9, and CAISO set a new solar generation record of 23 GW on July 10.
The takeaway is not just a single headline number, but a pattern: more places are reaching new clean-energy highs while meeting real-world demand on hot summer days.
