When people living at Wilks Park in Wagga Wagga faced move-on notices, local residents kept coming back to help.
The Guardian reported that a small group of concerned citizens dropped off food, helped people get to medical appointments, arranged meetings with Centrelink, visited people in hospital and housed one resident.
Leigh Swansborough stayed with a distressed young woman while she called for help and later checked on her at hospital. JJ, a former camp resident, returned to cook meals with food donated by OzHarvest and to offer tea, late-night help and useful contacts.
Another local, Angelo, drove a man to a motel so he could have a hot shower and a warm bed. None of these acts solved the housing crisis, but together they made sure people were not left to face a hard week entirely alone.
