England is planning up to 159 new NHS mental-health facilities under a £343 million expansion announced by the government on August 5.
The plan includes 100 community mental-health centers where people can get walk-in help without a referral, along with 59 specialist mental-health emergency departments for people in crisis.
The community centers are intended to bring mental-health teams, GPs, councils, voluntary groups and families closer together. Emergency departments will offer same-day support for people who are medically fit and do not need treatment in a general emergency department.
The first facilities are expected to open in autumn 2026, with more following from March 2027. Final locations still depend on design, procurement and business-case approvals.
