England’s Department for Education announced new school food standards on September 14, the first major update in more than a decade.

The standards call for more fresh fruit and vegetables, fibre-rich foods, and balanced meals designed to help children stay focused and energized during the school day.

The department said the rules were tested with schools, caterers, and sample menus. Schools will also publish their food policies and menus online, while the government plans to provide training and guidance.

The changes are part of a wider package that includes free school meals for three million children in households receiving Universal Credit and thousands of free breakfast clubs.
