Alexis Smith was riding home on a Hollidaysburg Area School District bus in Pennsylvania on Sept. 18 when the driver suffered a medical emergency and became unresponsive.
The 10th-grade student helped bring the bus to a stop, used the radio to call for help, and checked the driver's pulse and breathing while they waited for medical responders.
Smith had taken part in hands-on health and medical science training through the Greater Altoona Career and Technology Center. That practice helped her respond carefully instead of panicking.
WTAJ reported that the account came from a post by the Hollidaysburg Area School District. The school district credited Smith's quick response with preventing a potentially dangerous situation.
