The Government of Kazakhstan, the European Union, and the United Nations Development Programme have launched a new project to strengthen local governance in Kazakhstan.
The initiative, called Advancing Local Governance Reform in Kazakhstan, will support local institutions, participatory decision-making, and public services that are more inclusive and responsive to residents.
The project began with a steering-committee meeting in Astana attended by representatives of Kazakhstan’s national ministries, the EU delegation, and UNDP. The European Union is contributing 4 million euros to the initiative.
Good local government is felt in ordinary places, through services, information, and decisions that work better for the people who use them. The partners say the project will build local capacity and encourage more citizen participation as the reform moves forward.
