The Government of Mozambique has announced plans for a Strategic Funding Coalition for Off-Grid Electrification. The group will bring together development finance institutions, climate and energy funds, philanthropies, and private investors.
Mozambique has more than doubled electricity access, from 31 percent in 2018 to nearly 65 percent today. The country's goal is universal access by 2030, including an additional 4.9 million connections.
A related seven-year project will use solar-powered mini-grids and renewable energy for productive work. Sustainable Energy for All says it could benefit about 225,000 people, 52 percent of them women, and avoid an estimated 399,131 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent over its lifetime.
The coalition is still being formed. Its first step will be a nine-month process to design a national financing roadmap, so the announcement is a plan for coordinated work rather than a completed buildout.
